Arnica: A Plastic Surgeons Secret Weapon
Every plastic surgeons secret weapon to reduce the swelling and bruising after surgery.
If you are one of those people who are more prone to bruising than others, then arnica cream might be the perfect solution. In fact, many of the most reputable plastic surgeons in the world recommend arnica cream as a treatment plan for reducing the swelling and bruising that results after many of their medical procedures. But there are some other remarkable benefits of this wonderful, yet relatively unknown, substance as well. Arnica cream also helps to remove joint and muscle stiffness and relieve pain.
What is arnica cream?
The cream is made from an alpine plant called the Arnica Montana, a close relative to the common sunflower, and has been used my physicians and healers since the 15th century. The Arnica Montana is also known by another named, the Leopard’s Bane. Rubbing a bit of the cream on bruised or discolored areas helps to accelerate the healing process of the affected tissue. Some other uses for arnica cream include:
- Relief from muscle aches and pains
- Relief of joint sprains
- Relief from superficial phlebitis
- Relief from inflammation and swelling
- Relief from insect bites
- Relief from pain caused by osteoarthritis
- Relief from sports injuries and strained tendons
Are there any other precautions?
Even though doctors often recommend using arnica cream as part of their aftercare treatment plan, they also warn against applying the cream on the associated areas until after the wound is completely healed. If you are using the cream to reduce the effects of bruising, then this would not really apply. Some other precautions include:
- Always consult a physician before using arnica cream.
- Arnica cream should never be ingested because it can be deadly.
- Pregnant women or those who are currently breastfeeding should not use arnica cream. The chemicals can be passed along to the infant through the mother’s milk, and the possible harmful effects are as yet still unknown.
- Since the Arnica Montana plant is a close family member of the sunflower, those who are allergic to sunflowers might also be allergic to arnica cream.
It is also important to note that arnica cream is not intended to be used for long periods of time. Long-term use can result in blistering, peeling, and other skin irritations.
